Flash Fiction: Type AB-

Good day everyone!

I'm excited to bring you a new 400 word flash fiction story, this time about a character you've seen before. Nakia has featured in "Quality Time" before on this blog. We'll go back in time from that story and peak into her journey to becoming a nurse!

This story was created using the following prompt:

Character: A woman in her early 20s who is shiny.

Situation: Your character is suddenly a doctor.

Action: Your character must make a difficult compromise to succeed.

This story has a content warning for blood and serve injury, although not described in detail.

Enjoy the story!

“Nakia come quick!”

I look at my partner Ciana and shade my eyes as the sun from the skylight shines on her blonde hair and yellow scrubs.

“What’s wrong?”

“Doctor Solis got hit in a car crash on the way here and the nurses need us to help.” She explains

“We’re just residents!” I protest, my stomach sinking.

“We need to think like doctors now. Besides, it’s only a blood... transfusion...” Ciana’s sentence trails off as she remembers what I am.

“I’m not going to be able to help, if the doctor’s lost too much blood I’ll go feral... I can’t help it,” I say, shame coming to my eyes as I desperately try to escape the situation.

“They need us,” she grabs my wrist, “I know you have it in you to stay sober!”

It’s hard to say no when she gives me puppy eyes, golden eyes shimmering in the light.

“Then don’t leave my side, don’t let me handle the—”

“Ciana, the other driver just came in. I need you to help them, and Nakia, you to the doctor.”

We’re stopped by a frantic Nurse Javerson who talks at the speed of light. Ciana agrees immediately and goes to the room Javerson tells her. I follow Javerson into the room with the doctor and upon seeing his condition, already feel a loss of control. My eyes target the blood and I fight every fiber in my body to stop from running to it.

“I need Type AB- from storage now.” Javerson demands.

“Y-yes ma’am!” I reply, rushing to the blood storage.

That’s just my luck; it’s the most antigen rich blood. I feel my fangs dig into my lips and start tasting my blood substitute. I lick it up and open the cabinet, scanning for the bag I need. Upon seeing AB-, I grab the bag and lock the cabinet, pressing my lips over my mouth as I run back to the room.

“Nurse Javerson!” I squeak, hooking the bag up to the IV when she points towards it.

I listen carefully as she continues to instruct me to clean up the blood on the doctor. By the time I’m dismissed, I run to the door and stand outside, clearing my head with the fresh air. Ciana steps outside and grabs my hand, waiting for my eyes to say it’s safe before giving me a tight, comforting hug.

Hope you enjoyed this little story about Nakia! Next week I'll have an extra special car show post for everyone.

Have a great week!
