Welcome back! I hope you've all had a great week. I got back from my yearly trip to Lake George NY yesterday and caught up on my sleep this morning. It was a great trip as always!
This week I have another flash fiction story featuring Civic and Koa, who you can read about here: Flash Fiction: Christy
The prompt for this story was quite simple.
Location: This story starts with a DnD campaign.
Action: Your bites off more than they can chew.
Enjoy!
The purple die clangs onto the table, as we wait impatiently for its judgement.
“Fourteen,” my brother says, “Alright. Your orc bites into the monster’s arm.”
Koa and I cheer.
“Told you could I make it!”
Sol suddenly rolls something behind his screen. It’s never good when the game master rolls behind the screen.
“You fail to let go of the bite.”
“What!?”
“Your teeth are stuck in the monster’s tough skin.” My brother shrugs.
“You really bit off more than you can chew,” Koa says.
“Shit.” I mutter.
“It’s my turn, isn’t it?” Koa asks.
“It is,” Sol says.
“I’m going to try and cut its arm off.”
Sol laughs, shaking his head. He mutters something to himself, and gestures for Koa to roll.
“You two are so cute,” he says as he watches Koa and I mutter our plans to each other.
Koa rolls a plastic d20 onto the battle map, the sun reflecting a red line onto the monster’s arm.
“So cute.” Sol swats away the die, which had only rolled a five. “Your sword smacks onto the tough skin and flies back.”
“Guess I’m dead,” I say, looking at the monster’s miniature.
“The monster is going to try and get you off its arm. Roll a d20.”
I grab the purple die and look Sol in the eyes. We do roll offs all the time for things like this. It’s not in the rule book, but who cares? The game cops aren’t coming for us.
We send the blue and purple polyhedral dice crashing into each other, both landing at the edge of the table.
“Natural twenty!” I cry, sticking out my tongue.
“The monster flings you off,” Sol snatches up his die, “but you land in the loving arms of Koa’s elf.”
“Good one,” Koa smiles, “I set him down so he can take his turn.”
“I decide it’s probably better to not bite this time, and swing my club at the injured arm.”
“A much better choice,” Sol says, laughing as I send my die flying once more.
I had a great time writing this story. I based Sol off the Honda del Sol, just as Civic and Koa are based on cars (Honda Civic and Pontiac Vibe respectively.)
Have a great week!
