Flash Fiction: Mushroom Robbery

Good day everyone!

It's been a few weeks since I've posted a story, meaning it's once again time for a 400 word flash fiction story. This was the story I wrote during my burn out, and I found it interesting to look at what came from mu exhaustion. I'd say it's an interesting concept, but it could be executed differently in the future. It's a teaching moment to see where I can improve.

The prompts for this were:

Setting: The story ends in a mushroom house.

Situation: A robbery goes badly.

Action: Your character loses their phone.

“Hold your hands up!”

The robber points his knife at me, and I do as he asks. I slowly raise my hands, wings fluttering nervously. His face is covered by a mask, making it hard to see much more than that his dark blue wings.

“Where are your valuables?”

“I have none, sir,” I answer honestly.

“We’ll see about that,” the robber waves to his accomplice, who flies around my room, tearing through my clothing and cheap jewelry. I see his wings are green, but his face is covered too. Not much information to tell the police.

I shift slightly, and the man moves closer, “Don’t move.”

“R-right!” I stutter.

"Allen, have you found anything good yet?”

“No!” his accomplice answers.

“Damn it, well hurry up! Someone will notice the broken window soon enough!” The robber shouts.

I have nothing valuable, unless they find a cheap phone valuable. I need to distract them with something so I can call law enforcement. I use my thumb to knock loose the ring on my pointer finger, which makes a clattering sound.

“What was that!?”

“Come look,” Allen says, making the robber move to inspect the ring.

“Go find law enforcement, tell them there are robbers at my house with blue and green wings” I mutter to my phone, tossing it out the window. So glad I installed wings on it, I can make a call without having to dial a number.

I return my hands to their upright position as the robber holds his knife to me again, “Don’t try to be pretend you don’t have anything of value! I know you do.”

“I really don’t,” I answer, “Not that you’ll listen.”

“We better scatter before the police come,” Allen says.

“We can’t let the lady see where we’ve gone,” the robber says.

“We’ll just knock her—”

Allen is interrupted by the sound of sirens. I smile, knowing the police are coming. The two robbers jump out different windows, and are pursued by law enforcement. That’s two windows I need to fix, but insurance on mushroom houses is pretty good. I should be covered.

I hope you enjoyed this imperfect and silly story! Have a great week.
