Flash Fiction: Midnight Traveling

Good day everyone!

I hope you've had a good week. I've been very busy with work, and I'm glad I had this week's story ready before I got burnt out. I hope you enjoy this fun flash fiction story about Reed making a car ad!

This week's prompt was very simple.

Theme: It's a story about travel.

Action: Your character is filming a video.

“You're saying you want me to film an ad about travel, without traveling?”

The woman from Halcyon nods, “That's easiest to film.”

The man from Warrior sets a hand on my shoulder, “I know you're used to being on the track, but the studio is the best place to shoot advertisements.”

“You're forgetting who I am. I've been alive for four thousand years, I know a thing or two. Give me one of your fancy cameras and I'll film you a better ad than you'll ever get in a stuffy studio.”

The car company executives look at each other to decide if that's a good idea.

I sit in the car and pull out my phone.

“Actually, this'll do.”

I drive the car out of the studio and to an empty highway, it's mine anyways. I bought it to race and as soon as the CEOs figured out I had one they were on me like halcyons— I'll see myself out.

I prop my phone so it can read the gauges and make tracks. The needle climbs from zero to sixty in one second. I don't stop until I've used the whole speedometer. I let the car slow back to sixty before stopping the video, then start recording my face.

“You expected that from the 4031 Midnight, didn't you? But Warrior and Halcyon have always changed expectations, so let me change yours.”

I end the video and drive back to my house, walking inside.

"Ezra, I'm filming an ad for the new Midnight I got. You wanna be in it?"

My boyfriend, startled that I just burst into the house, nods, "Sure, what do I need to do?"

"Just act like I've been gone all day when I come back inside," I answer.

He laughs, "Sounds good."

I run outside and set up the next scene.

“It's just that simple,” I hitch my camper to the Midnight, “The 4031 Midnight's fit to travel.”

I set up a shot of the car easily pulling the weight of the camper before going inside.

“Reed, how was the—” Ezra pauses when he sees me return with the camera.

“You wanna take a road trip?” I extend my hand so the camera can see.

Ezra takes it and laughs, “Of course I do.”

Then we pack and haul the camper to one of the District's national parks, recording everything. Once parked, I face the camera towards us.

“The new 4031 Midnight, built for anything,” I kiss Ezra before turning the camera off.

“Are you taking me home?” He asks when I've sent the footage to the executives.

“I'm not gonna promise you a trip and not deliver,” I hum, getting out of the car to get the camper ready for the night.

I hope you enjoyed this goofy story. I went over 400 words for today's post just to be sure I had enough context.

I'll see you all next week,

-Rosetta 💖
