Flash Fiction: Her Jewelry Box

Hello readers!

I'm happy to return after my break to bring you more flash fiction stories! Thank you all for allowing me the time to enjoy my vacation.

This week's story is much half as long as normal, as I wasn't feeling great the day I wrote it. However, I still hope you'll enjoy. The set of prompts was tricky to blend together well.

Character: A man in his 90s who's rich.

Situation: Someone believes a crime was committed.

Theme: Inner peace.

Action: Your character approaches the situation with extreme caution.

I look around to see the room is depleted of all its valuables. I’ve probably been robbed of my riches in my old age. I step into the room with caution, glancing towards my wife’s jewelry box. Seeing it broken into is heartbreaking. I look into the box, gently pawing through the cheap pieces they left behind.

The plastic ring we won at an arcade on our honeymoon.

The silly hamburger earrings I made her out of clay.

The pony bead bracelet from our granddaughter.

All of the items that hold my memories of her.

The robbers only took the pieces I spent hundreds of dollars on, the ones she never wore. The stuff that looked shiny and perfect. I know I should be worried about losing those pieces, even though she’s not around to wear them again.

But I’m not. I breathe in a sigh of relief seeing that my important memories of her are still here. I close the box and calmly walk to the phone to report the robbery, not wanting this fate to befall anyone else on my block.

Hope you liked this short story! I'm pretty happy with the message it could tell in with so few words.

Have a great week!
