Flash Fiction: Don't Need Words

Hello everyone, I hope you're having a wonderful week. I've got a new flash fiction story for you, with an interesting prompt. I had a challenge writing for this one, but I like the result!

Character: A man in his 30s who is wide-eyed.

Situation: No one can talk.

Action: Your character is getting hacked.

I stare at the screen, my eyes wide open. What do I do now that my laptop screen is glitching out? How am I going to finish my work?

I frantically start pushing escape and trying to reset it. Maybe it’s not a hacker, maybe it’s something else. I hold the power button and try to shut it down, but nothing works.

I hear a knock at the door and see my mom enter the room. She signs, asking what’s wrong.

I sign in return, “It’s been hacked or something, I don’t know.”

She rushes over to the computer to try and help. I’m not good with computers, but she works in hacking. She’s the kind of hacker that helps with security. I hope she knows what’s going on.

I watch quietly as she clicks away at the keyboard, restoring the screen to a readable screen. I’m so grateful she decided to stay the night. I didn’t want her driving home so late because I know she hates driving in the dark, and my wife and I are happy to let her stay in the guest room. She was so worried about paying us back, and in a way, she is now.

She turns to me and signs, “Did you do anything that could’ve upset someone?”

“I don’t know. I got this laptop from work recently.” I sign.

“My best guess is that someone is upset with this IP address.” She signs in reply.

I shrug, shaking my head. I have no idea.

My mother returns to the laptop, trying to fight off the hacker. I watch in amazement as she easily fends off the hacker. I can’t help but smile as she restores the laptop to a normal state. When she turns around to face me, I sign a “thank you.” She stands up and hugs me tightly, and I return it.

We don’t needs words or signs in this moment. She knows exactly what she wants to tell me, and I know exactly what I want to tell her in return.

I love you.

I hope you have a wonderful day!
