Flash Fiction: Corvette Spellbook

Good day readers!

I apologize for my absence, college has left me very busy with little time to sit down and write a post. Now that I've settled in, I should be back to my regular posting schedule. Today I have a flash fiction writing exercise from my creative writing class. The goal was to take a random object and use it in an unexpected way, and if you've read the title, I think you can figure out what my choice was. Enjoy the story!

I take a breath and unfold the 1967 Chevrolet Corvette pamphlet. The front end of the sparkling red Stingray opens to the same red coupe now parked in sand dunes. The page below depicts a beige interior boasting genuine leather seats and a red dashboard with the latest technologies for 1967. I quickly open the second page to get to all of the words.

“To help you save money,” I run my finger across the page as I speak the words, “Chevrolet Efficiency System.”

I look up from the pamphlet and see a coupon manifesting on the table. It flutters mid air, waiting for me to continue my spell. I flip to the exterior page and run my finger under the next words I read.

“For comfort and convenience, four season air conditioning. Easy-to-use controls for heating and cooling.”

The coupon floats down onto the table as the spell ends.

“Is this actually going to work?”

I glance towards my husband, smiling as I snatch up the coupon.

“Let’s head to Walmart and find out, shall we?”

We drive to the store in his 1997 S-10, his skeptical glances only making me feel smug. We find the portable air conditioner that we’d determined fit perfectly in our new home. The coupon takes on the style of the air conditioner’s box, making it look legitimate. And when I hand it to the cashier, they read it and accept it with no questions asked. I help my husband load it into the truck, confusion still written on his face.

“How did you acquire a Corvette spellbook pamphlet?” he asks.

“My grandfather gave it to my mother and she gave it to me.”

He shakes his head as a smile forms on his face.

“You never fail to amaze me.”

I can’t help but smirk with pride as he kisses my cheek and heads for the driver’s seat, having saved twenty percent on our new air conditioner.

Alright, that was a silly one for sure, but it was tons of fun! I plan to get my post about Watkins Glen out before the end of the month, but no promises.

Have a great week,

-Rosetta 💖
