Flash Fiction: Aliens and Astronauts

Hello readers!

I have another flash fiction story for you this week. This week's prompt was tricky, but I think I was getting creative with it.

Character: A young girl who is not amused.

Setting: The story ends on another planet.

Situation: The witness to a crime suddenly disappears.

Theme: This is a story about emotions.

Action: Your character falls.

Hope you enjoy!

“Sadie, did you see which way the robber went?” I ask my step-daughter, showing her the play police badge I made.

“I did.” She looks up from her tablet skeptically.

“Would you help me find him? He stole all the money from the bank!”

Her only response is an unamused blink.

I was expecting that. Rejection is hard after two years and it’s even worse from a nine year old.

“Please?” I put my hands together and beg.

“No.” She goes back to playing an alien game.

“Well, there goes my witness.” I mutter, sitting in the chair across from the couch.

I sit and think about how I could engage her. Her mother won’t be home until she’s has gone to bed, and I don’t want to ignore her all day. I took off of work today so I could watch her, I want to make this time memorable. Then it hits me. I spring up from the chair and head for the room where we keep our recycling.

I reconstruct two clean boxes and cut a big square hole in one, and two round eye shapes in the other. I use a black marker to make the first look like a space helmet, and a green marker to make the other look like an alien. I use the scrap from the first box to cut out some antennae for the alien mask and color them green, taping them on the top.

Going back to the family room to see Sadie still playing her game, I hold the boxes in her direction.

“Do you want to play the alien or the astronaut?”

“The astronaut!” She perks up.

I place the box over her head and put the alien box on my own head.

“Prepare to be taken down, alien!” Sadie sets her tablet on the couch and jumps onto the floor. She runs after me and I start running away.

“Never! We will take all of Earth’s cows!” I shout.

“How dare you take our cows!”

We run around the couch a few times before I purposefully take a dive on the chair when she taps my shoulder.

“You’ve defeated me!” I cry.

“No I haven’t, I still want to play.” Sadie pouts.

I get up and smile behind the mask.

“Ok, you better run!”

Sadie runs as I chase after her, starting a long game of tag.

I want to let you know that I most likely won't be posting next week due to a long vacation.

Thanks for reading!
